My Teaching Philosophy

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.

-Victor Hugo-

Teaching piano lessons gives me the opportunity to watch people of all ages, enter into the world of music and watch their minds soak in the sounds and sense the accomplishment they find playing this wonderful instrument. Because I was classically trained, I find great joy in teaching students how to both read and play music. The lessons also include learning music theory using games, along with other written and interactive exercises, with the goal of engaging the child using a multi-sensory approach. I begin offering lessons to children beginning at age 6 because in my experience, they are able to remain engaged while picking up the concepts necessary for moving forward.

Working with teens and adults is also a wonderful experience, and I love reminding my adult students that it is never too late to begin learning to play the piano! I find the key ingredients for an enjoyable learning experience to include: joining the student where they feel most comfortable, providing a relaxed and encouraging environment, and celebrating even the smallest bit of progress.
